The Dogs of Shaw

IMG_4429

If you live in Shaw, you must own a dog. Period. And, I don’t just mean a pit bull. Shaw is the epicenter of DC’s dog revolution. I spend an hour on most mornings at a coffee shop opposite Garrison Elementary School. The parade of dogs that goes by is astonishing – both in number and diversity.  And, they all seem really happy.  It’s amazing.

Three-Eyed Devil

IMG_4753

This devil lives just down the block from the Howard Theatre, on the side of a row house in the alley.  He is half of an amazing painting that covers almost the full side of the house and extends along a fence.  I actually don’t know if he is a devil, a deity, a genie or what.  And no idea what the bell in the upper righthand corner is about.  But I was blown away when I happened upon him one glorious morning a couple weeks back.  Incredible.

Tribute Mural to Marvin Gaye

This is the mural that got me interested in documenting street art here in DC.  I had started riding my bike to and from work, and then began taking early morning rides on the weekends, through Shaw, downtown and over to the Hill.  I had noticed the Marvin Gaye mural on my travels, and it had become a bit of a landmark for me.  And then after a winter of not riding, I couldn’t find it.  I was sure I was in the right spot, at 7th & S, but now I saw a new mural of Gaye on the other side of the street.  Whaaat?  And a new row house stood on the lot where the original mural had been.  The mural was gone for good.
