Is that Zac Efron??

If anyone told me that there were dozens of murals in DC, I wouldn’t have believed it.  Sure Marilyn and a few others — but all of these wild and beautiful works of art on our streets and in our alleys?  No way.  Yet, here they are.  Certain neighborhoods seem to have really embraced the medium:  U Street, Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, Brightwood and Park View.  I haven’t ventured much into Southeast or Far Northeast yet, so we’ll see what’s there.  But so far, I amazed that I find new art on the streets every weekend, almost everywhere I go.

The city is empty today — and it feels great.  Like a huge exhale.

This mural is on the backside of Paul Junior High Public Charter School, across from some community gardens.  I love the multi-hued hand.  And the recycling symbol tree.  There’s more of it to the right, that includes a big pile of vegetables and a commitment to being green.  It’s great.

Peace Is Its Own Reward

This is an idea whose time has definitely come — again.  It’s been a brutal summer in DC.  We just passed 100 homicides for 2015 — way beyond the number at this point last year.  The cops aren’t offering much insight, other than there being too many guns on the street, which is not a new situation.  There are some new, crazy, synthetic drugs on the street, too, which might explain some of these murders.  The only silver lining, if there can be one, is that (to my knowledge) the MPD is not responsible for any of the killings.  In America today, that’s saying something.
