Sometimes the base of a lamp post is really a blank canvass. At least some creative person in Woodley Park thinks so. I would never have known these beauties existed along Connecticut Ave, had I not started riding my bike to work. They brighten my commute every day.

This gentleman was once so ubiquitous around town that the Post wrote a story about him. It might be a self-portrait, but I can’t recall the specifics. Whoever he is, he’s still really cool. I’ve only managed to see maybe four or five of these lately. This one is on Michigan Avenue, NE just across North Capitol.

There are a couple of amazing murals at this intersection, and this is one. It advertises a hair salon, but it seems almost spiritual to me. The woman is so striking. Her expression is searching, but powerful.

When I worked on U Street in the 90s, this mural was a beautiful, vibrant landmark — and now it’s back, courtesy of the ongoing destruction/construction of the neighborhood. I love the guy on the drums in the lower right corner.
